William's First Flights - by Wong Yee Lee

As my child is growing bigger and older, there are more things that I cab en relieved of from worrying and yet more things that I have to start planning about.

It was his first summer. He was eight months old and he had his first Asia-Europe flight experience. He flew to see his grannies in England. He had it with only me, his mom. At the time, he could not walk; he could not talk and he could still not demand much. All I had to prepare was to make sure there was enough milk supply, nappies and some simple small toys for entertainment. He was a very good baby as he slept mostly throughout the night flight. I could still remember all he did was just a little stir in the cot when the baby behind him was crying and screaming throughout the whole flight. When he was not sleeping, he was such a sweet baby who would not disturb anybody near us and eventually all his neighbours praised him for his good manners.

During his second summer in life, he turned 20 months. There was the same trip to England to see grannies. Once again, he did not disappoint us. He slept throughout most of the flying time and occasionally he patrolled along the aisle to inspect other passengers. Unlike the first summer trip, we did not get the same smooth connection for the domestic flight. Despite the delay. He just waited with us. As usual, when the next flight finally took up, he fell asleep in the wobbly cabin.

We are looking forward to his third summer trip to see grannies. Being his only company, I can feel that I am growing with him. There may be not as many milk and nappies to prepare. Yet, there may be more toys to bring in order to occupy him. He will be turning into three and a half by the time he flies. Without the comfort of being able to sleep in a cot, but the confined space of a seat, I wonder how we are going to get through the hours. We are so used to flying thirteen hours in one go. What about splitting the time into two halves with a connection in Dohar? Let me wait and see!
